What is Line 3/93?

Line 93 is an oil pipeline owned by Canadian energy transportation company Enbridge, Inc. to ship tar sands oil from the Athabasca region in Alberta, Canada to Superior, Wisconsin for refining and further shipping.

This pipeline was built to replace and expand the capacity of an old Enbridge pipeline, Line 3, and it was still called Line 3 throughout the years of permitting and construction. Our team calls it Line 3/93, as this is the nomenclature Enbridge now uses for this tar sands pipeline.

The Line 3 replacement project was proposed in 2014, and faced years of fierce resistance from Water Protectors in Minnesota and around Turtle Island. After years of delay by the movement, construction of the pipeline began in December of 2020. Although Water Protectors resisted construction for months on the frontlines, Line 3/93 was rushed to completion by September, 2021, completing in 10 months what was proposed as a two-construction-season plan.
